Create the Perfect Holiday Feel with Accents

The holidays are such a fun time for family time and entertaining. What better way to get in the spirit of this festive time than to decorate with accents? Decorating accents encompass a wide range of “things you can do” to highlight something in your décor that stands out, compliments other items or brings together an overall theme. We often think of accents being objects like vases, pictures, art, sculpture etc. But accents can be nothing more than thematic color, texture or patterned fabric added to your décor. You can even think of an accent such as a piece of furniture added to a room to help offset some of the other pieces you already have.

For the holidays, a few things come to mind; parties, family and festive environments. Your home may be very relaxed, comfortable and paired down for most of the year, but come Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah, you really want to enliven the space and the look of the overall décor.

Let’s say your base décor is neutral with a lot of natural fibers and you have an active and busy family, so you don’t put out a lot of decorative items like vases or picture frames. The holidays are coming, and you’ve agreed to entertain family or friends. How can you quickly maximize the potential of your home while not spending a lot of time or money on elaborate decoration?

Decorative Pillows

One of the easiest ways to add color or a holiday look to any room is to add a bunch of decorative pillows. Pick pillows that have a unified color theme like reds or golds. Add texture with jacquard woven patterns or lush textures such as velvet or faux fur. Get a bunch of pillow covers to switch out with basic inserts in 18 x 18 or 20 x 20. You can transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas and Hanukkah in as much time as it takes to switch the cover.

Furniture Slipcovers

If you’re planning on having more guests than you have furniture in your home, you may need to add another piece of furniture to the living space or a bunch of dining chairs for extra guests. The problem with adding furniture for a temporary event is that often times the furniture you have is mismatched or may not be as contemporary as you wish. This problem can be fixed in an instant with furniture slipcovers. Grab a slipcover for an added loveseat or chair in red or gold and match that slipcover with red and gold dining chair slipcovers perfectly. All of a sudden you have a refreshed, elegant and unified look with colors that highlight the holiday feel. The added bonus here is that your furniture is also protected against spills and wear and tear.

Drapery

You love colorful drapery, but not all year long. If your day to day look is neutral or focused on the subtle look of sheers, during the holidays you may want to add some holiday color to create a more unified look to your décor. Rich fabrics like velvet or jacquard or thick embroidery can add a warm glow against the outside chill. Grommet top or rod pocket drapery is relatively easy to switch out for a temporary look and can really make a bold statement to your other holiday decorations.

Holiday colors, rich textures and sumptuous fabrics can add just the decorating accent you need for guests and entertaining while being easy and cost effective. For more decorating looks check out all our collections; slipcovers, window curtains and drapes and decorative pillows.
